The Perkins Road Overpass is Growing

Jimmy Johns, Denium Library, and Rock-N-SakePerkins Road is a long street with a many stores and attractions including Perkins Rowe. Closer to the Garden District, Perkins Road offers a pocket of places around what locals call the Perkins Road Overpass. A few staples of this area are Chelsea’s, Zippy’s, The Royal Standard, and Frankie’s Dawg House.

Chelsea’s is a restaurant cooking specials such as grilled veggies on focaccia bread and a fried calamari & parmesan poboy. For a twist on an old favorite try the grilled cheese on focaccia made with 6 cheeses and paired with a cup of tomato basil soup. At night Chelsea’s becomes a musical venue serving selections of regional, domestic, and imported beers. A perfect place for lunch or dinner!

Zippys is a quick Mexican restaurant located in a converted gas station. Delicious Mexican food at cheap prices, a bar serving frozen drinks, and a spacious patio with TVs make this an ideal place to catch up with friends. It’s also open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays!

The Royal Standard is one of the best gift stores in Baton Rouge selling furniture, clothing, and gifts for the home. Pick up a cheese tort for the next function you are hosting – it’ll be an instant hit!

Frankie’s Dawg House is Baton Rouge’s first gourmet hotdog shop and a recent addition to the Perkins Road Overpass Area. Located in a small house, Frankie’s Dawg House offers any hotdog topping you could possibly crave. “The Situation” is bacon along with macaroni and cheese on top of a hotdog. “The Frank” is their classic hotdog with their version of a corndog appropriately named “The Golden Girl.” Open 7 days a week, Frankie’s Dawg House is convenient for a spontaneous treat!

More establishments have recently joined the area moving into a complex developed out of the Perkins Road Hardware building that caught on fire in 2006. Clothing stores stand alongside restaurants like Jimmy John’s, Schlittz & Giggles, and Rock-N-Sake.

Jimmy John’s sandwiches are the freshest in town! The meat used contains no vegetable-based fillers, no additives, and is not pre-sliced. The meat is sliced each day in the store. The staff also uses the best condiments such as Real Hellmann’s mayo, Grey Poupon, and real olive oil. However, the ingredients are only half the reason Baton Rouge loves Jimmy John’s – the staff is super fast! No matter if you choose to dine in or have your custom sandwich delivered, you won’t be eating a better sandwich in less time.

Schlittz & Giggles offers delicious pizza in a relaxed atmosphere. I recommend an order of knots to start your meal followed by a slice of “Kitchen Floor.” If you feel like watching a football game, this is the place for you! A 196 inch TV is in view no matter where you’re seated.

Rock-N-Sake advertises loud music and fresh sushi at reasonable prices. Drink specials include ½ priced bottles of wine on Wine Down Wednesday and $10 beer buckets for every LSU football game.

Also check out the area clothing stores Stella, Bella Bella, Loft 3H, and the Denim Library.
