“The Jazzy Weekend Kick-off” by Christina Zito
As I walked down Third Street on Friday evening, I heard the music from Live After Five and decided to follow the crowd toward the Old State Capital building to check it out. The weather was perfect for a couple of Abita beers, music and some dancing. Bits and Pieces is a 10-piece local band that plays a variety of music from Oldies to R&B and Soul. I walked up while they were playing KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes,” which is always a favorite! Also, one of the lead singer sang Etta James’ classic “At Last,” I got chills when the singer hit the high notes!
Galvez Plaza was completely crowded, there were barely any places left to sit when I got there. People started line dancing as Bits and Pieces played, and others joined in as the band played different genres until there was no room. The crowd was amazing- people of all ages came downtown to have a good time. Children enjoyed dancing with their parents, professionals socialized after a long work-week, other people danced and some just sat and enjoyed the cool weather and the music.
While people enjoyed the band, Abita and Budweiser vendors were busy serving drinks. Local caterers also tempted my take buds with fried alligator and jambalaya. However, I decided to stop at Schlitz and Giggles on Third Street to grab a slice of pizza for the walk to my car. The margherita pizza was an amazing end to my Live After Five Experience. The Live After Five Concert Series includes eight concerts in the fall and eight in the spring. The Downtown Business Association organizes the event to promote businesses downtown.
