Ahmad Jamal

How long is a musical career? When the music comes straight from the soul that career lasts a lifetime, and that lifetime transcends time and becomes timeless. Now approaching his ninth decade in music, Ahmad Jamal may be one of the last living titans of jazz’s so called Golden-Era. He continues to redefine modern jazz and perform and record actively. Innovative hip-hop artists like Kayne West and Jay Z sampled Jamal and created modern variations from Jamal’s inspirations. He continues to travel around the world. Noted for his outstanding technical command and identifiable sound as a piano stylist, Jamal creates a unified sound and subtly inserts independent roles for the bass and drums. The hallmarks of his style are rhythmic innovations and colorful harmonic perceptions. He incorporates a unique sense of space in his music, and his musical concepts are exciting without being loud in volume.

Miles Davis proclaims, “all of my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal.”

The Melody Maker states that Ahmad Jamal is “the most exciting, creative keyboard artists living.”

The Village Voice claims that “no musician has had a more profound effect on the orchestral approach to small groups in the last 35 years than Ahmad Jamal.”
