Baton Rouge Ballet Theater Presents “Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou”
Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre presents:
The Nutcracker:A Tale From the Bayou
A Magical Holiday Tradition

Nutcracker A Tale from the Bayou
(BATON ROUGE—October 27, 2009) The Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre’s production of “The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou,” the crown jewel of the Baton Rouge holiday season, returns to the River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, December 19th and Sunday, December 20th, with 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. performances each day. The beloved production features world-class guest artists, award-winning local dancers, and a unique southern Louisiana flavor on the holiday treat that the whole family will enjoy. The Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra will accompany all four performances of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece.
BRBT Artistic Directors, Molly Buchmann and Sharon Mathews, have created a distinctive version of the timeless classic which revolves around an imaginative girl, Clara, who receives a nutcracker for Christmas. The story unfolds as only a south Louisiana Clara could imagine: snow falling on majestic Oak Alley, the party scene takes place at antebellum Nottoway Plantation and the Sugar Plum Fairy’s castle is Baton Rouge’s own Old State Capitol.
Guest Ballerina Hiroko Sakakibara, a member of New York’s renowned Complexions Dance Company, returns to portray the Sugar Plum Fairy. BRBT’s own award-winning pre-professional corps and soloists, area celebrities, and over 300 children will join Sakakibara. Many of BRBT’s dancers have received scholarships to noted dance schools such as Julliard, American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet and many others.
In addition to choreography by Buchmann and Mathews, Susan Perlis, Associate Artistic Director of BRBT, has choreographed additional scenes. The magnificent Louisiana set design is by Nels Anderson, formerly of the LSU Department of Theatre faculty, with lighting design by Louis Gagliano.
Each year a special Nutcracker performance logo is designed for use on materials, company t-shirts and other items. This year’s logo was designed by LeeAnna Rhodes, BRBT Company member who attends LSU and is majoring in graphic design. The logo features the Nutcracker doll on a fleur de lis of Spanish moss, accented by snowflakes.
Tickets range from $20-$42 and may be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations and through the River Center Box Office. Phone orders will also be taken by the BRBT office at (225) 766-8379.
A school-day production on December 16th at 9:30 a.m. is open to area schools. Tickets for this special performance must be purchased in advance through the BRBT office.
